KOTA BARU: The electronic tracking devices will not be fitted on all persons under investigation (PUI) and persons under surveillance (PUS), Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said.
The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department said the Health Ministry would decide on the selected patients.
"It is not possible for us to fit the device on all the PUI and PUS patients as the number is big. Therefore, it will only be used based on certain needs.
"For example, if the PUI and PUS patients failed to follow the Health Ministry's directive, they will be fitted with the device so authorities can monitor their movement," said Takiyuddin, after a gathering with former national and state football players here yesterday.
He said the move was among new provisions made to the Emergency (Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases) (Amendment) Ordinance 2021.
It was reported that the tracker, similar in mechanics to those given to parolees, would be fitted on those with Covid-19 infection or suspected of carrying the virus for a period of 10 days.
It was among five new amendments and provisions that were updated in the act which would come into effect on March 11.
Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba in a recent joint statement with Takiyuddin said Covid-19 patients being treated at low-risk quarantine centres and at home would be required to wear the device.
Dr Adham said PUI suspected to have contracted the virus would also be required to wear the device.
He added that the National Security Council would finalise the model of the device before March 11.
