KUALA LUMPUR: The government is in the process of improving and amending the Employment Act 1955 to expand its application to all employees in the private sector, regardless of salary limits.
Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this would include extending the maternity leave to 90 days and granting a three-day paternity leave, improving work-life balance through a reduction in weekly working hours from 48 hours to 45 hours, apart from introducing flexible working arrangements.
In his televised Labour Day address today, Muhyiddin also said the government was currently reviewing the Minimum Wages Order 2020.
"The government is always concerned about the issue of minimum wages and will work to ensure it remains relevant with the current socio-economic situation.
"I hope and urge all parties who wish to voice their opinions and suggestions on this matter to take part (in the review) through the platforms provided," he added.
Muhyiddin also said the government, through the Skills Development Fund Corporation, would introduce the Skills Training Variable Loan Policy Programme (Dasar Pinjaman Boleh Ubah Program Pinjaman Latihan Kemahiran) for the Malaysian Advanced Skills Diploma.
This, he said, was in line with the government's aim to increase the number of skilled workers in the country, apart from reducing dependence on foreigners.
