KUALA LUMPUR: The Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom) confirmed that two staff members from its Wangsa Maju branch have been summoned to provide statements to the Road Transport Department (RTD).
Its chief executive officer, Mahmood Razak Bahman, said the two staff members are scheduled to give their statements to the RTD enforcement department tomorrow.
He, however, did not provide further details on the reason for the staff being required to give statements.
Mahmood also confirmed that a vehicle inspected at the Wangsa Maju branch had been seized by the RTD for using a foreign driver without a valid driving licence.
"Puspakom emphasises that the involved staff will not be protected from any internal disciplinary action if wrongdoing is proven. To ensure the integrity of Puspakom inspections, the company will not hesitate to take appropriate action against the staff involved as outlined under the terms and conditions of their employment contract, including suspension or dismissal," he said in a statement.
The RTD conducted a nationwide operation at all Puspakom branches to ensure that every vehicle inspected at these facilities complies with the established standards.
Among the violations detected during the nationwide operation was the use of worn and unsafe retreaded tires on heavy vehicles, despite the drivers being aware that these tires could burst at any moment.
Meanwhile, Mahmood said that full cooperation would be given to the RTD, which carried out surprise inspections at all Puspakom branches nationwide.
He said Puspakom welcomed enforcement actions at its branches, aimed at ensuring that inspection operations are carried out according to the established standard operating procedures.
"The move is in line with efforts to promote road safety practices in the country. The cooperation between Puspakom and RTD is believed to strengthen efforts to improve road safety and preserve the integrity of the national transportation system. Puspakom is always committed to ensuring that all vehicles inspected meet the required safety standards. This surprise inspection is part of the RTD's ongoing efforts to ensure safety and compliance with road vehicle laws. We fully support this initiative to ensure that all inspection procedures are carried out transparently and in accordance with the standards set by the authorities," he said.
