KOTA BARU: Kelantan has recorded 10 cases of the South African Covid-19 variant as of yesterday.
All cases of the variant designated as B.1.351 were from those involved in inter-state travel.
State Government, Health and Housing Committee chairman Dr Izani Husin said the figure was from the new Kampung Bunut Sarang Burung cluster.
"The state health department has detected the South African variant which has spread to Kelantan due to interstate travel.
"The department believes it entered Kelantan through locals who returned to the state after attending a wedding in Kuala Lumpur," he told reporters at his office today.
The Health Ministry previously announced 27 more cases of the South African Covid-19 variant in Malaysia, to date.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah was reported to have said the cases were detected through genomic surveillance conducted from April 24.
He said these 27 cases were then confirmed by the Institute for Medical Research (IMR).
He said this variant was detected for the first time in Perak and Kelantan, involving two clusters, along with seven cases in Selangor.
