Covid-19 'silent carriers' detected through screening in Selangor

SHAH ALAM: Selangor's free Covid-19 screening programme which kicked off on May 8 has revealed that those aged between 20 and 40, who fall into the productive group category, are "silent carriers" of the Covid-19 virus.

Selangor Health Care (SelCare) manager Mohd Noor Md Nasir said the group did not show any signs of Covid-19 symptoms prior to being screened but their test results returned positive.

"This productive group are those who are working and go out and about with their activities without realising that they have been infected with Covid-19 and could be spreading the virus to other people.

"Through screening exercise conducted from May 8 to May 11, close to 80 per cent of positive cases that were asymptomatic are from the age group.

"Overall, 8,587 screenings were conducted during the period and four per cent were confirmed to be Covid-19 positive," he said today.

Mohd Noor said the programme, which is under the state government's Pandemic Mitigation Phase, will resume on May 18 after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

He did not discount the possibility of a possible surge in cases after Aidilfitri celebrations and hoped the government's current movement restriction measures could stem the infection.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari had earlier announced the implementation of the Covid-19 surveillance programme through free screenings at 56 state constituencies nationwide which kicked off on May 8 until June 10.

He said the free screening would be conducted at all 56 state constituencies, covering two constituencies daily.
