Muhyiddin discusses Palestine, Myanmar issues with UN sec-gen

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today had an in-depth discussion with United Nations (UN) secretary-general Antonio Guterres on issues related to Myanmar and Palestine.

The Prime Minister's Office, in a statement, said Muhyiddin told Guterres that Malaysia and Asean countries had met in April to find a solution to address the crisis in Myanmar.

"Malaysia also informed that the appointment of a Special Envoy of the Asean Chair is being finalised to find a peaceful solution in the interest of the people of Myanmar.

"The prime minister is of the view that the UN and Asean can work together to find a solution to address the political crisis in Myanmar, especially through the five-point consensus reached during the Asean leaders' meeting."

According to the statement, Muhyiddin and Guterres have also agreed that the involved parties should continue to work constructively to ensure political and economic stability in Myanmar.

Meanwhile, on the Palestine issue, Muhyiddin and Guterres also expressed regret over the violence against the Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory.

"Malaysia has strongly condemned the Israeli military aggression on Palestinians who were barricading the Al-Aqsa Mosque on May 7.

"In this regard, the prime minister expressed his gratitude over the ceasefire by both sides by Israeli and Palestinian fighters.

"The prime minister also expressed support for the efforts taken by the UN and countries involved to ensure the warring parties adhere to the ceasefire and find a lasting solution to end the conflict."

During the phone call, both Muhyiddin and Guterres agreed that the suffering of the Palestinian people must be stopped immediately and it was imperative to find the best solution to ensure lasting peace for both sides.

"On that basis, the prime minister reaffirmed Malaysia's stand on the establishment of a free and independent Palestinian (state) from the Israeli occupation through a two-state solution, based on the pre-1967 border with Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine."

The phone call, read the statement, reflected the UN's recognition of the important role played by Malaysia in the issue of Myanmar and Palestine at the international level.
