(Updated) 5,911 new Covid-19 cases today

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia recorded 5,911 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of infections to 691,115, with 64,523 active cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor continued to record the highest number of positive cases with 2,111, followed by Negri Sembilan with 770 and Sarawak (569).

"Johor logged 498 new cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (483), Perak (245), Kelantan (223), Kedah (204), Sabah (201), Labuan (185), Penang (167), Melaka (134), Terengganu (62), Pahang (56) and Putrajaya (three).

"Perlis registered no new cases," he said in a statement today.

Dr Noor Hisham said of the 5,911 fresh infections, 5,910 were local transmissions (75.2 per cent Malaysians and 24.8 per cent foreigners), while the remaining one was an imported case (Malaysia).

He noted that the number of recoveries continued to exceed daily new cases at 6,918, bringing the cumulative number of recoveries to 622,244.

Patients requiring critical care, he said also saw a decline with 886 patients admitted in intensive care units (ICU), including 441 who are on ventilator support.

He said 72 more fatalities (involving 64 Malaysians and eight foreigners) were recorded yesterday, bringing the death toll to 4,348.

"The victims, aged between 29 and 90, were from Selangor (23), Kuala Lumpur (15), Negri Sembilan (seven), Pahang (six), Johor (five), Sarawak (five), Labuan (three), Kelantan (two), Penang (two), Sabah (one), Perak (one), Melaka (one) and Kedah (one)."

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said 24 new clusters were reported to the ministry today, involving 12 workplace clusters, seven community clusters, four detention centre clusters, and a high-risk group cluster.

"The workplace clusters were identified in Selangor, Johor, Melaka, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang.

"The community clusters were reported in Kelantan, Sarawak and Johor, while the detention centre clusters were identified in Negri Sembilan, Johor and Kelantan. The high-risk group cluster was reported in Kedah."

He added that to date, Malaysia has a total of 2,604 clusters, including the 824 active clusters and 1,780 clusters that have ended.
