KUALA SELANGOR: The main suspect involved in the murder of a year-old baby girl has died while receiving treatment at the Tanjong Karang Hospital near here yesterday.
Selangor police chief Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed said the 27-year-old man, who allegedly hacked his year-old niece on her head during a row among family members, had been injured during the incident in Kampung Parit Mahang, Jeram.
He said the suspect's injury was likely due to a struggle that occurred as family members tried to detain him.
"After a family member detained him, the suspect was then arrested by police and brought to the Kuala Selangor police headquarters for further investigation.
"Around 4pm yesterday, the suspect became much weaker and the police called an ambulance to admit him to the Tanjong Karang Hospital.
"The hospital took 30 minutes to treat the suspect. He was declared dead at 6.37pm," Arjunaidi said in a statement today.
He added that the family has been informed about it, and a post mortem examination will be conducted by the hospital after a Covid-19 swab test results on the man is released.
"A police report has been lodged by the suspect's family to identify the cause of his death.
"The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has opened an investigation paper and will focus on the duty of care in the standard operating procedure and criminal procedure in managing the suspect's remains," he said.
Yesterday, it was reported that a baby girl died after her uncle hacked her on the head in a house in Kampung Parit Mahang, Jeram during an argument among family members.
A resident at the village told Harian Metro that the suspect allegedly brandished a parang to attack a relative, but he hit the year-old baby instead.
The suspect tried to lash the parang once again toward the same relative, but was held back by a family member.
It is understood that the row among family members was due to a financial issue.
The suspect had been detained, while the parang was also seized.
The case is investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
