KOTA BARU: The government will continue to provide assistance to farmers in the country, especially those badly affected by Covid-19 pandemic.
Deputy Agriculture and Food Industry Minister II Datuk Che Abdullah Mat Nawi said the government's assistance has been on-going since the pandemic started.
He said it was channelled to affected farmers through the respective agencies such as the state National Farmers Organisation.
He said the move was also to ensure there would not be any shortage of food supply during the National Recovery Plan (NRP).
"The government has been providing assistance to help farmers and my working visit to several farms today is to ensure enough supply during the Phase Two of the NRP.
"As example, this watermelon project called Projek Bersepadu Pertanian Banggol which started in 2002 is now the main producer in the state.
"This project is among those that received the ministry's support and assistance," he said after visiting the site in Pengkalan Chepa yesterday evening.
Che Abdullah said the project could produce about 960 metric tonnes of watermelon with an income of RM1.44 million a year.
During the visit, Che Abdullah also handed over food donations under MAFI Prihatin to 32 project operators.
