Covid-19 Delta variant surge in Sarawak puts halt to dining-in

KUCHING: No dine-ins will be allowed for restaurants and stalls in Sarawak despite the state shifting into Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan tomorrow.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee Chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the decision was made following the detection of more Covid-19 cases involving the Delta variant in the state.

"Dining-in is temporarily barred until the latest guidelines are issued by the Local Government and Housing Ministry," he said in a statement today.

The Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) said the state has detected another 16 Covid-19 cases involving the Delta variant in Kuching as of July 4.

Its director Prof Dr David Perera said they have been tracking the variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus circulating in the state.

The first case of the variant was detected on June 18 involving a 56-year-old man, whose case was classified as Import B (returning from another state).

"With the latest (16) cases, the state now has 17 cases of the Delta variant, all detected in Kuching," he said.
