KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands have died due to the deadly Covid-19 but the prime minister and his government appeared to be enjoying their time in Putrajaya, said former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He said given the current state of the country's Covid-19 situation, the government should have done some reality checks and understand the kind of struggles the public were going through on a daily basis.
"I, together with the opposition support the stance that sittings must be held today (Monday) to discuss the Emergency Ordinances," he said, sharing the stage with opposition leaders calling for the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister.
The Langkawi MP arrived at 10.13am as opposition MPs gathered at Dataran Merdeka after being denied entry to Parliament.
Dr Mahathir added that Malaysia must be governed by the Rule of Law, as such MPs must be allowed to bring matters to the Dewan Rakyat for debate.
"This government is destroying this country and I hope the people will realise it.
"We were supposed to discuss matters on the emergency (in Parliament) as scheduled but were not allowed to, and we are even unable to talk about it outside, what is happening to our country?," he said.
Later, 107 opposition MPs led by PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim marched towards Parliament.
They were heard singing "Inilah Barisan Kita" and chanting "undur Muhyiddin (step down Muhyiddin) and "Reformasi" as they marched.
The MPs, however, were blocked by police's Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) at the roundabout near the Bank Negara Malaysia building.
