PM thanks deputy, MPs for pledge of support

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has thanked his deputy Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and all members of parliament from Barisan Nasional (BN) for supporting the Perikatan Nasional administration.

Earlier today, 32 BN MPs including Ismail Sabri pledged support to Muhyiddin's leadership and affirmed that matters involving the government's legitimacy should only be resolved in Parliament.

"I thank them for agreeing that my legitimacy as the Prime Minister should only be determined in the Parliament this September through a confidence vote and not by any other means.

"This is in line with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah's decree that was conveyed to me at Istana Negara on Wednesday.

"I hope the BN parliamentarians' position will halt the ongoing political turmoil and allow the government to fully concentrate on efforts to combat Covid-19, expedite vaccination and the country's economic recovery.

"The people and nation's welfare must be prioritised while we face this pandemic," he said.

On Aug 3, 11 Umno MPs including its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced their revocation of support for Muhyiddin.

However, on Aug 4, Muhyiddin affirmed that he still commanded the majority in Parliament and that the king has consented for his position to be tested when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes in September.

Zahid, on the same day, refuted Muhyiddin's claims and challenged the latter to call for a special Parliament sitting before September to prove his majority.
