Warisan wants more details of opposition's role in fight against Covid-19

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) wants a more detailed offer of cooperation to be extended to members of parliament in the opposition bloc in the nation's on-going efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

Its deputy president Datuk Darell Leiking said the government's offer could be described as scanty, sparsely touching on their involvement in the National Recovery Council and the Special Committee on Covid-19.

Commenting on the "olive branch" extended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to the opposition in the fight against Covid-19, Leiking said at the moment, the offer was merely an invitation with the absence of details.

"We believe that the prime minister should continue with the seven-point cross-party framework proposals for bipartisan cooperation which was previously offered by his predecessor (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin)," the Penampang MP told Berita Harian.

He added that if Ismail Sabri was really a sincere and mature politician, the Bera MP should continue with the proposals brokered previously by Muhyiddin.

The offer made by Muhyiddin for bipartisan cooperation when the political turmoil was at its peak, said Leiking, was important for the people's well-being.

"Therefore, it is better for the proposals (offered by Muhyiddin) to be reintroduced in line with the decree by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who wanted all political leaders to put aside their differences for the people's well-being and welfare.

"At the same time, I would like to stress that the recent political crisis occurred not because of the opposition but because of Umno after 15 of its MPs withdrew their support to Muhyiddin," he said.

Leiking also agreed that a motion of confidence vote should be tabled in Parliament to determine Ismail Sabri's legitimacy as the prime minister.

"Ismail Sabri's position as the prime minister is not strong since the majority (of MPs who supported him as the prime minister) is slim.

"Hence, he has to prove his legitimacy in Parliament to ensure that the same incident will not recur," he said.
