KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has congratulated powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin for delivering Malaysia's first gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.

"All the sports enthusiasts in the country are definitely celebrating Malaysia's success in grabbing the first gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics which is contributed by our powerlifter Bonnie Banyau Gustin.
"Your ability to perform amazingly well that our national anthem, Negaraku, was played in the arena proves that you are indeed one of the prime prospects to win a gold medal in this edition.
"The impressive performance that broke the Paralympic record will surely continue to be remembered in the history of national sports. Congratulations to Bonnie, coaches and the entire Malaysian team," he posted on Facebook.
The 22-year-old powerlifter delivered Malaysia's first gold in the Paralympics when he won the men's 72kg competition at the Tokyo International Forum.
He shattered the Paralympic record at 228kg. It was the country's first medal in Tokyo and powerlifting's best achievement.
