Bonnie sets sights on world championships after Paris victory

KUALA LUMPUR: National powerlifter Bonnie Bunyau Gustin will now shift his focus to next year's Cairo World Championships after concluding a successful outing at the Paris Paralympics yesterday (Sept 6).

Bonnie, who is from Kampung Baru Mawang, Sarawak, said he will, however, first focus on recovering after suffering an injury in Paris.

The 25-year-old struggled with pain in his left shoulder at La Chapelle Arena yesterday but was still able to break his own world record en route to defending the men's under-72 kilogramme class gold after clearing 232kg.

"The world championships will be held in Egypt next year (Oct 11-18) and I am looking forward to competing there," Bonnie told the National Sports Council after his win in Paris.

"But I will need treatment for this injury first, especially as there is some swelling."

Bonnie's previous world record was 231kg which he set at the Dubai World Championships last year.

His 232kg in Paris also erased his own games record of 228kg which he set en route to winning gold at Tokyo 2020.

Bonnie's victory in Paris will see him receiving RM1 million via the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam).
