KUALA LUMPUR: After 150 days, the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) vaccination centre (PPV) has inoculated its last Covid-19 vaccine recipient.
Since opening its doors to the first batch of opt-in AstraZeneca vaccine recipients on May 5, the vaccination centre (PPV) had seen nearly 1.3 million doses being administered to 645,000 people, making it the PPV with the most number of shots given in the country.
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, after officially closing the WTCKL PPV, said there was no longer a need for mega-PPVs as most areas had achieved a satisfactory vaccination rate.
"We no longer need big PPVs as it will also involve cost and others.
"When we are satisfied with the vaccine coverage at an area, then we will start closing down PPVs in stages," he said tonight.
He added that he would be meeting with Health Ministry and Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry officials to discuss the PPVs that should remain open to inoculate those who have missed out on their appointments or foreigners.
Khairy also said there were some PPVs still being used for teen vaccination programme, which was also being conducted in schools.
"As for booster vaccines, we will use private and government clinics. The mass vaccination exercise has been completed."
On the teen vaccination programme, Khairy said there had not been any reports of adverse side effects from the vaccine.
Earlier in his speech before closing the PPV, Khairy thanked volunteers, uniformed bodies and all technical staff for their service to the nation.
He said at its peak, the WTCKL PPV administered up to 18,000 vaccine doses daily.
"When I was just appointed as Health Minister, daily cases at its highest was at 23,000. Today, it's at over 9,000 cases.
"More importantly, the numbers in Klang Valley had drastically gone down, that is because of all of you," said Khairy.
