'We are ready for Undi 18'

KUCHING: The Sarawak government is currently focusing on the battle against Covid-19 as well as the people's socio-economic well-being and economic recovery.

Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Youth secretary-general Milton Foo said Chief Minister Datuk Abang Johari Tun Openg had also made it clear that the people's lives are more important than politics and elections.

He opined that the Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh's statement, claiming there was an on-going effort within the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) ruling coalition to hold the 12th Sarawak state election soon to avoid Undi 18 was 'mere speculation'.

"We are not avoiding Undi 18, in fact, SUPP Youth and other GPS (youth wing) component parties are ready for Undi18," he told the New Straits Times.

"We have been relentlessly engaging with them in all sectors, including education, career, job opportunity, entrepreneurship, sports, welfare and so on in the past years with the goal to help young Sarawakians excel," he said.

Foo said Undi 18 should be viewed as apolitical as it was one of the fundamental rights enshrined in the federal constitution and of any democratic country.

"We must respect democracy and allow our youths to exercise their voting rights to determine the future of the country. The issue of whether it will give an advantage to a political party is irrelevant if not immaterial."
