Covid-19: 8,743 new cases

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia reported 8,743 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today, a slight decline from yesterday's 9,751.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement said the cumulative number of cases now stood at 2,332,221 since the start of the pandemic.

He said of the new cases today, 14 were imported involving seven Malaysians and seven foreigners.

Of the local cases, 8,729 were Malaysians and 471 were foreigners.

Dr Noor Hisham said out of the total cases reported, only 1.4 per cent were in Categories 3, 4, and 5 with 122 cases.

The remaining 8,621 (98.6 per cent) were asymptomatic or mild symptoms under Categories 1 and 2.

Currently, he said 770 cases were being treated at the intensive care units, whereby 419 of them were on ventilator support.

Dr Noor Hisham added as of Friday, the nation's infectivity rate stood at 0.86.

"Putrajaya recorded the highest Rt at 1.11, followed by Perlis (1.08), Negri Sembilan (1.03), Terengganu (0.98), Kelantan (0.97), Pahang (0.95), Melaka (0.94), Kuala Lumpur (0.88), Sarawak, Perak, Kedah and Selangor (0.87), Penang (0.83), Johor and Sabah (0.83) and Labuan with nil Rt value."

On new clusters, Dr Noor Hisham said another 10 clusters were identified today, including four workplace clusters, four community clusters and two high-risk group clusters.

Currently, there are 845 active clusters nationwide.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said as Malaysia prepares for the transition towards living with the virus, reporting methods and data detailing from now on will be more focused on important and key indicators.

As previously announced, he said detailed information of the Covid-19 infection and transmission will be uploaded to the CovidNow website at covidnow.moh.gov.my, with the data being updated at midnight daily.
