KUALA LUMPUR: All television network including private broadcasting stations, with the assistance of Bernama, will feature a sign language interpreter during their respective news segments.

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said the move would ensure greater access to the media as well as to enable people with disabilities to be updated with the latest news and information.

In his speech when unveiling the 2022 Budget, Tengku Zafrul also paid tribute to four sign language interpreters for their contributions.

"Maybe not many people know who is Tan Lee Bee, Khairunnisa Kho Abdullah, Wan Zuraidah Abu and Goh Soo Leng.

"These are the people made their contribution (immensely) as sign language interpreters on television," he said.

Under the 2022 Budget, he said, the government would allocate RM30 million to upgrade infrastructure at government complex to ensure that it was more disabled-friendly.

"This allocation, amongst others, will be used to prepare special lane at government complex for people who are visually impaired," he said.
