KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is set to become a hub for hydrogen and other renewable energy production, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
The state Public Works Minister said the green aim could be achieved via comprehensive development that include upstream and downstream businesses, logistics management and the selling of the energy.
The state government, via its state-owned company Smart Sabah Corporation Sdn Bhd, has identified several main projects including the proposal on large scale solar development for hydrogen gas producer system; Green Independent Power Plant; and Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion.
Among the identified locations for the development are a 50ha area covering Kalabakan, Pulau Layang-Layang and Pulau Kelumpang.
"For beginning, Smart Sabah Corporation Sdn Bhd has signed agreement with Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) on Nov 9 to enable a possible feasibility study to kick start the renewable energy project.
"This project is expected to bring in direct investment of not less than RM25 billion to Sabah apart from creating 20,000 job opportunities in various sectors for the people of Sabah," said Bung, adding that the project is expected to start next year.
Bung, who is also Smart Sabah chairman, welcomed investors and industry players to explore the opportunity to realise the state's renewable energy plan.
