Pakatan Harapan does not support amendments proposed for Act 342

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakatan Harapan does not support the amendments proposed in the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Amendment) Bill 2021 tabled in Parliament yesterday.

The coalition's secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the bill, if passed, would only open up more room for abuse of power, corruption and double standard practices.

"Although an additional amendment was made to the bill today to reduce fines and compounds, Pakatan Harapan MPs are not in favor of the bill which is expected to be tabled tomorrow."

Saifuddin said PH's stand has been conveyed to the prime minister by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim but if the government goes ahead and debates the bill, Pakatan Harapan will not support the bill in the present form that it was tabled yesterday.

"I urge the government, especially the health minister, to withdraw this Bill and hold in-depth discussions with Pakatan Harapan and the (other) opposition (members).

"By doing so, better amendments can be considered and agreed upon," he said.
