Myanmar man who gouged eyeball of 52-year-old in Penang pleads guilty

BUTTERWORTH: A Myanmar man arrested in connection with an altercation that left a 52-year-old man permanently disfigured after losing his left eyeball last Saturday pleaded guilty to committing the offence.

Murtabis, 28, entered the plea when the charge was read to him before Magistrate's Court Assistant Registrar Mohamad Azrul Muhd Sobri today.

According to the charge sheet, the accused was charged with causing hurt to the victim by the roadside at Flat Rethina, Jalan Ara Kuda in Tasek Gelugor at about 2pm on Nov 16.

The charge, framed under Section 325 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum penalty of seven years' imprisonment and a fine.

In the same court room, the foreigner also pleaded guilty of entering the country without valid documents.

He was charged with committing the offence at Kampung Simpang Tiga, Tasek Gelugor, at about 3pm on the same day he committed the first offence.

For this offence, he was charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which provides for a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both, and caning of up to six strokes.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Airina Syazreen Zainurin prosecuted while the accused was not represented.

The court has set Dec 13 for the presence of a Myanmar interpreter before sentencing and has denied bail for the accused.
