KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia) has forecasted that floods may hit several low-lying areas in the east coast, central and northern regions of Peninsular Malaysia today due to continuous rain throughout the day.
MET Malaysia director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, in a statement, said a tropical depression system was formed in the South China Sea and had entered Pahang last night.
"The system is expected to move westward across Peninsular Malaysia. This situation has led to continuous increase in humidity and heavy rainfall in most areas of the east, central and northern areas in the peninsula, and this may cause a risk of rising sea levels and floods in low-lying areas in those areas."
MET Malaysia has also issued a danger-level (red) warning for continuous very heavy rain in Kemaman, Terengganu and Kuantan, Pahang.
"Continuous torrential rain is expected to occur in these two areas throughout the day (Friday)."
It also issued a severe-level continuous rain warning (orange) for Kelantan, Besut, Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun in Terengganu as well as Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Jerantut and Pekan in Pahang.
It also issued an alert-level warning for continuous rain warning (yellow) for Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak and Raub, Bentong, Temerloh, Maran and Bera of Pahang.
