Police on standby following emergency water discharge from Klang Gates dam

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are gearing up for any possibility following an emergency discharge of water from the Klang Gates dam in Hulu Klang, whose water level had breached the danger mark.

To date, 25 per cent of the total volume of the dam has been discharged in stages.

Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Farouk Eshak said all policemen in the district are geared up to face any possibility.

"Right now, our manpower consists of five officers and 32 personnel from the Melawati, Hulu Klang and Ampang police stations as well as the district police headquarters.

"All hands are on deck to face any possibility, especially in Taman Melawati and nearby areas," he told the New Straits Times Press tonight.

Farouk said the first emergency discharge was conducted at 11.50pm earlier tonight.

He urged the public to remain calm and gave his assurances that the water discharge was done in a careful manner and according to procedure.

He said all policemen will be promptly despatched to assist the public.

"Your lives and safety, as well as that of your family, are our priority compared to important documents and other properties which may be damaged in disasters," he said.
