Malaysians rally on social media to help Klang Valley flood victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Frustrated Malaysians affected by the floods which crippled large swathes of the Klang Valley earlier today have rallied on social media to help each other.

#DaruratBanjir was at press time the top trending hashtag on Twitter, with social media users applying it to call for help, offer help as well as send words of encouragement to flood victims.

One user, Harith Najmuddin, who goes by @hxrithn, had related how he had been stuck on a flyover outside Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam for 12 hours due to the floods.

Traffic, he said, was at a standstill.

"We have built our own society here, with the van keropok as our source of sustenance. Tonight, we shall vote on a leader to guide us through dark times," he said.

Shah Alam and Klang were among the worst-hit areas in the Klang Valley, with surging waters cutting off access to roads and adjoining expressways, leaving numerous people stranded in their vehicles.

In response to Harith's tweet, many asked him for help to seek out their family members and friends who were stuck along the same road, and check on their conditions.

"Been running around looking for people to make sure they're safe. Still no movement yet 12 hours in, water is rising in front of us, not sure about the back, still no other food, no water," he later wrote.

Other Twitter users in the area have also offered room and food to the victims should they be able to make their way past the flood waters.

Dharshinee Suresh Kumar, who goes by @ayeitsdharsh, was among the many who were distributing help to flood victims.

"If you need any sort of help, please don't hesitate to reach out. We will be sending flood relief teams over to help out. Do DM me or let me know if your area is affected," she wrote, offering help to those in the Shah Alam and Klang area.

Others meanwhile, shared locations where stranded motorists or flood victims could head to for sanctuary.

The Raja Tun Uda Library in Shah Alam was among those who opened its doors to flood victims seeking refuge.

An update on the Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Selangor Facebook page stated that the public library service would be open for the night.

"A few of our visitors and staff are stranded in Pustaka Raja Tun Uda due to the flash floods around Shah Alam.

"The Pustaka Raja Tun Uda service is still open tonight. If you are stuck in the vicinity, can come to our library for shelter and rest. The library café is also still in operation."
