MUDA to be registered, government will not appeal court's decision

HULU LANGAT: The Malaysia United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) will be registered as a political party and the government will not appeal the High Court's decision directing it do so.

Home Minister, Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin said following discussion with Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, it was decided that the government will not appeal the case.

Therefore, he said MUDA can be registered as a political party when all its relevant documents are in order.

Last Tuesday, the High Court ordered the Home Minister to register MUDA as a political party within 14 days.

Judge Datuk Noorin Badaruddin made the decision, after allowing a judicial review application filed by Muar Member of Parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and 12 other individuals.

They challenged the Home Minister's decision and the Registration of Societies (RoS) to reject their appeal to register MUDA as a political party.

In its judgment, the High Court described the reason for rejecting the registration of MUDA, as being prejudicial to the country's national security, as being unfounded.

Last Saturday, Hamzah said he was open to approving the registration of MUDA as a political party.

However, he had to reject MUDA's registration earlier because several individuals who were members of the MUDA pro-tem committee had committed legal offenses.

"Syed Saddiq has met me before. He sought for (approval) and I have advised him.

"The problem is that I had to reject previously because in the Societies Act 1966, it does not allow anyone in the pro-tem committee.. those who sought to establish a new party… who had violated the laws of the country," he said.
