GEORGE TOWN: Preparations for Thaipusam celebrations in the state are almost complete.
Thanneermalai Shree Balathandayuthapani Devasthanam (Hilltop Temple) chairman Datuk R. Subramaniam said their preparation was at 90 per cent.
He, however, said they were awaiting for the final standard operating procedures (SOP) to be released before making a final announcement on the matter.
"We have prepared for whatever situation to ensure a safe Thaipusam celebration," he told newsmen when met at the temple here today.
He accompanied and briefed state police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain on the temple's preparations for the forthcoming Thaipusam celebrations.
Subramaniam said for Jan 17 and 18, they would strictly adhere to SOPs released by the National Security Council.
For other days, they would comply with the standard SOPs already in place.
Meanwhile, Mohd Shuhaily said he was pleased with the temple's preparations.
He said the temple committee also went to the extent of preparing stickers for residents living near the temple to make it easier for them to leave and return home.
On the police side, Mohd Shuhaily said they were still waiting for the SOPs to mobilise the necessary manpower.
"Preparations are already in place. For now, we will mobilise some 1,300 personnel on the ground to monitor the situation.
"Depending on the SOPs, we will make a final decision soon," he added.
The Penang government has assured that the Thaipusam chariot procession this year would be held in a safe manner with strict compliance to the SOPs.
Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy had said that all precautions would be taken to ensure the heath and safety of all devotees throughout, with help from the relevant authorities.
