Covid-19: 9 deaths, no BID reported yesterday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry reported nine Covid-19 deaths yesterday, which increased the national death toll to 31,818.

The ministry's CovidNow portal data showed no brought-in-dead (BID) cases reported yesterday, which means the BID death toll remains at 6,417 since the coronavirus struck the country in early 2020.

The nationwide average in deaths due to Covid-19 was reported at six deaths per one million people, with Terengganu recording the highest average of fatalities at 21 deaths, followed by Pahang (11), Melaka (10) and Kelantan (7).

Kedah and Johor, each, reported six coronavirus-related deaths on average of one million population.

Negri Sembilan, Penang, Selangor and the Klang Valley recorded an average of five deaths per one million population in each country, Perak (4), Sabah (4), Perlis (4), Kuala Lumpur (2) and Sarawak (1).

Zero deaths were reported in Labuan and Putrajaya in the last two weeks. The country's current fatality rate stood at 0.5 per cent, with its overall fatality rate of 1.1 per cent.

The ministry also logged 3,245 new Covid-19 cases yesterday, bringing the cumulative coronavirus cases to 2,813,934.

Currently, there are 40,761 active Covid-19 cases, with 82.9 per cent (33,809 patients) observing quarantine at home and 9.8 per cent (3,994 patients) at Covid-19 quarantine and treatment centres.

Another 6.8 per cent (2,775 patients) are hospitalised and 0.4 per cent (183 patients) are being treated at intensive care units (ICU) whereby 84 of them are being ventilated.

The country conducted about 87,711 Covid-19 screening tests daily, with a 2.9 per cent positivity rate reported.

The ministry reported that on an average of seven days, 2,937 Covid-19 cases are transmitted sporadically while 181 cases were transmitted via a cluster.

The nationwide hospitalisation rate is at 65.3 per cent overall, with a Covid-19 rate of 25.5 per cent. On average, hospitals received 824 admissions daily.

Currently, five states recorded hospital bed utilisation above 70 per cent, namely Melaka (84 per cent), Kedah and Kelantan (both at 76.8 per cent each), Johor (76.1 per cent) and Terengganu (75.5 per cent).

Seventeen new Covid-19 clusters were also reported yesterday, which increased the cumulative clusters to 6,235, with 188 clusters (3.0 per cent) are currently active.

Of the total, four were workplace clusters, 11 were education institution clusters, one were high-risk groups and one religious-linked cluster.

A total of 61,275,354 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered as of Jan 18, with 129,597 vaccines administered daily.

On average, at least 79.7 per cent of the adult population have been vaccinated with one dose, 78.6 per cent with two-dose and 29.8 per cent of the adult population have completed their vaccination cycles, including booster shots.
