KANGAR: The Federal Territories Ministry will look into the proposed implementation of a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour (km/h) in selected zones around the capital as well as 50 km/h in other zones.
Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said he was aware that a similar approach is being taken in reducing the speed limit in big cities globally.
"(The move) to introduce this will be something we will look into and will announce later," he said after attending a dinner in conjunction with the 2022 KL-Arau Golden Ride Convoy for the Golden Jubilee celebration of Kuala Lumpur at a hotel here last night.
On Friday, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said his ministry had studied the proposal and needed the feedback of several stakeholders.
Reports citing the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (Miros) and Kuala Lumpur City Hall said they will work towards implementing a 30 km/h speed limit in selected zones in the capital and 50 km/h for other zones.
In May last year, Miros proposed a 30 km/h speed limit for residential areas, towns and villages as part of the national road safety plan for 2021 to 2030.
The proposal is part of a campaign carried out under the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) which targets the implementation of a 30 km/h limit in areas that see a mixture of pedestrians with traffic vehicles.
