BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Penang Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry seized various food items worth RM54,402.90 for allegedly misusing the halal logo during an inspection at a premises in Bukit Tengah here yesterday.
Its director Mohd Ridzuan Ab Ghapar said the team had inspected the premises, believed to be processing the food items, following complaints from the public.
He said during inspection, the team found some items were using uncertified halal logo.
"During the inspection, we found the premises producing sesame oil, mustard seed oil and rose water among others, that used the halal logo without certification by a competent authority.
"As a result, the ministry confiscated 4,392 units of sesame oil, mustard seed oil (3,192 units), rose water (7,968 units), lemuju water (2,580 units) and 5,916 units of 'kaput', all worth RM54,402.90 for using the halal logo," he said.
Mohd Ridzuan said the case was being investigated under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011.
"We would like to warn all traders to be ethical and not to use the halal logo without being certified by the authorities first," he added.
