Storm wreaks havoc in Shah Alam and surrounding areas [NSTTV]

SHAH ALAM: As the proverb goes, 'It never rains but pours.'

Maznah Mohd Zin, 56, is still cleaning her house after the devastating aftermath of the recent floods that hit Shah Alam at the end of last year.

And yesterday, the roof of her house at Lorong Bunga Raya 3 in Kampung Bunga Raya, Section 22, was badly damaged following a powerful storm that hit the area around 5pm.

Recalling the incident, Maznah said she was at home with her daughter, when the rain started, followed by a heavy storm.

"I was already anxious when the rain started as I still remember the recent massive flood.

"Then my front door kept swaying and the sound from the strong wind was scary. I tried to close the door but could not.

"My daughter tried to help me to close the door and it was then when the entire zinc roof in front of my house was blown away, while part of the roof collapsed.

"It was the first time that I experienced this after I moved here 30 years ago," she said when met at her house today.

Other than Maznah's house, it was reported that more than 40 houses around the village were also badly damaged.

Luckily, no casualties were reported.

Another resident, Amran Amis, 48, was at the village's surau when the incident occurred.

"We just finished the Asar prayer, when part of the roof went flying, causing severe leaks at the surau."

After the rain stopped, Amran said he went home and saw his house had faced a similar fate when part of the roof was blown off.

"This was the second 'gift' for me and the residents here (after the recent flood). Nonetheless, we were thankful no injuries were reported due to falling debris," he said.

Other than Kampung Bunga Raya, the storm yesterday also wreaked havoc in several other areas nearby.

At a hypermarket in Section 13, the heavy storm blew off the roof at the parking lot, damaging eight vehicles.

At a traffic light near Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (PSA), two cars were hit by a falling tree.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the victims however managed to escape before the arrival of the firemen.

At PSA itself, the storm damaged several of its buildings, including office space, hostels and quarters, as well as a hall.

In a Facebook post, PSA said; "The roofs at several blocks were blown off, while the roofs at the parking lots have collapsed.

"Fallen trees around PSA and along the main entrance, with the boom barrier at the main gate broken.

"Several vehicles belonging to PSA staff were also damaged due to falling trees and roofs. Other damages and losses are being assessed."

The Management and Science University (MSU) also saw a part of the campus damaged by the heavy storm.

The university in a Facebook post wrote; "As reported in the mainstream media this evening (yesterday), we regret to inform you that the MSU campus was also affected by the storm.

"We are thankful that no injuries were reported."

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) yesterday (Jan 27) issued a weather forecast starting today (Jan 28) to Feb 3.

Its director-general Muhammad Helmi Abdullah said the east coast and northern states in the Peninsula will experience hot and dry weather.

"West Sabah, northern and central Sarawak, and the west coast of the Peninsula, namely Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan and Melaka are expected to experience thunderstorms and rain from noon to evening.

"The public is advised to always refer to MetMalaysia's website at www.met.gov.my, or social media platforms, as well as to download the myCuaca application for the latest information."
