MELAKA: Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) demonstrated its corporate social responsibility towards flood victims and a Muslim cemetery with a gotong-royong at two locations.
Led by UTem deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs) Datuk Dr Sabri Mohamad Sharif, a team of 26 department staff and eight Student Peer Mentoring Club members undertook the tasks.
They first visited the flood victims at Sungai Rambai to clean their homes, before moving on to spruce up a Muslim cemetery at Pengkalan Batu.
Sabri said that they undertook the relief mission based on their attitude of showing concern for the people involved.
"At Sungai Rambai, we also distributed basic necessities in the form of food baskets to selected families affected by the floods.
"As our added responsibility, we volunteered to spruce up the cemetery to maintain cleanliness and create a better atmosphere there," he said.
Sabri added that the initiative helped foster the spirit of helping each other in the UTeM community, as well as realised the social responsibility of campus residents to the local community.
"I am grateful and proud of the high spirit and commitment of the volunteers who were willing to sacrifice time and energy to help the flood victims in line with UTeM's characteristics of being 'Agile, Superior, Adaptive and Holistic'," he said.
The gotong-royong was joined by Pengkalan Batu state assemblyman Datuk Kalsom Nordin, who is also state women's affairs, family development and welfare executive councilor, with the support of Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp).
