17,476 new Covid-19 infections yesterday

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia registered 17,476 new Covid-19 infections on Friday, with the new cases taking the total cumulative coronavirus cases nationwide to 4,219,395.

According to the Health Ministry's CovidNow portal, Selangor recorded the highest number of new cases at 10,623 infections followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,191) and Perak (788).

In a statement today, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said of the total new cases, 17,312 comprised local transmissions involving 16,401 Malaysians while another 911 involved foreigners.

"There are 164 import cases involving 159 locals and five foreigners.

Of the total cases, Dr Noor Hisham said 17, 365 cases or 99.37 per cent are in Category 1 and 2 while 111 cases are in Category 3, 4 and 5 as of Friday.

"Out of the 111 cases in Category 3, 4 and 5, 22 comprised patients who have yet to complete their Covid-19 vaccine doses or yet to be immunised.

"A total of 45 cases have received two vaccination doses but have not been inoculated with the booster shot, with 44 patients having received their booster doses.

"There are 62 cases who are above 60 years old and 59 with comorbidities and one case involving a pregnant mother," he said.

As of Friday, 263 patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with 125 cases found to be positive for the coronavirus.

Dr Noor Hisham said 72 out of 162 patients who needed ventilation tested positive for Covid-19.

As of April 1, the Covid-19 death toll in the country has surpassed the 35,000 mark with 30 new fatalities including five brought-in-dead (BID).

The nation's current Covid-19 death toll stands at 35,013.

Dr Noor Hisham also revealed that there are six new Covid-19 clusters recorded yesterday, with 194 of them being active clusters.

The country's Covid-19 infectivity rate (Rt) remains the same for the second consecutive day at 0.87.

Selangor is the only state recording an Rt value above 1.0 and currently stands at 1.07, with Sabah the lowest at 0.65.

Dr Noor Hisham said 897 new hospital admissions involving Covid-19 cases were reported yesterday.

"Of this, 468 cases were in Category 1 and 2 while 429 were in Category 3, 4 and 5.

Dr Noor Hisham said 762 Covid-19 patients were also discharged yesterday.

He added that Covid-19 intensive care units (ICU) were at 30 per cent out of their total capacity of 880 beds.

As of Friday, only Kuala Lumpur registered over 50 per cent in the use of ICU beds at 67 per cent, a slight jump from yesterday's 57 per cent.

Putrajaya and Selangor also recorded more than 50 per cent use of non-ICU beds at 88 per cent and 64 per cent respectively.

Currently, there are 17,321 new recoveries while the cumulative recoveries in the country stood at 3,977,403.
