Muhyiddin: Expedite 1MDB trial in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has urged for the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) trial here to be expedited.

This comes after former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng was convicted by a United States jury on Friday of corruption charges related to his role in helping loot hundreds of millions of dollars from 1MDB fund.

The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president said that the trial in US had revealed evidence of 1MDB embezzlement involving key Malaysian government officials and leaders at that time.

He said that he had opposed the criminal acts of those involved from the beginning and will continue to fight to prevent the kleptocrats from returning to power.

"I believe the courts in our country will also give justice to all Malaysians in the 1MDB case which is still ongoing.

"The trial of this case must be expedited so that justice can be served immediately," he said in a statement tonight.

Datuk Seri Najib Razak was charged with four counts of using his position to obtain RM2.28 billion of 1MDB funds and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same amount.

He is believed to have committed the offences while being the Prime Minister between 2011 and 2014.
