MMEA conducts 150 daily inspections in Sabah waters

KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) conducted some 150 daily inspections on suspicious activities taking place in Sabah's waters.

Sabah and Labuan MMEA director, First Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the figure was based on over 15,400 inspections logged by the agency between Jan and April this year.

He said the inspections did not include radar station monitoring regulated by the MMEA for west coast waters .

As for the east coast, it comes under the care of the Sabah Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM).

"Although both waters are under the supervision of two agencies, we will share information from time to time where about 5,000 suspicious activities were detected this year.

There were 110 arrests for various offenses, he said during a press conference after the filming of the activity involving KM Arau Ship off Kota Kinabalu waters here yesterday.

Rosli said that among the offences that were often detected include those involving smuggling, drug supply and offences related to the Customs Act.

"Similarly, offenses involving illegal immigrants are also monitored under the Immigration Act.

"The joint operations among enforcement agencies such as the navy, police and others could help to prevent water-related offences from becoming rampant."
