LANGKAWI: Employers are reminded to register and settle their workers' Social Security Organisation (Socso) contribution before the end of this month.
Human Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Awang Hashim said failing which, stern action would be taken against errant employers under the Op Kesan nationwide beginning June 1.
"For those employers who have voluntarily registered their workers under the amnesty program (ending May 31) they will be exempted from being slapped with a compound, prosecution and interest charge for late contribution.
"Op Kesan will be carried out extensively and errant employers will be issued with compound on the spot. We might even consider opening investigation papers for prosecution purposes where it is deemed as necessary," he told reporters here.
Awang, who is also Pendang member of parliament said errant employers could be fined RM10,000 or two years' imprisonment or both, upon conviction for failing to register and contribute to their workers' Socso.
He was met after presenting Socso's funeral contribution worth RM2,000 to Ibrahim Majid, 68, the father of a late cruise ship crew member Ahmad Nur Hassanuddin.
Ahmad, 24, from Alor Star, drowned after falling into the waters near Kuah while travelling alone in a fibre boat on Wednesday. His remains were recovered three days later.
Present were Kedah Socso deputy director, Mohd Asri Mohd Rasid and Langkawi Socso manager Yusuf Kasim.
