Three killed in tanker-car crash

TELUK INTAN: Three people were killed and two others were injured in an accident involving a Volkswagen Passat and a tanker at Km7 of Jalan Maharajalela-Teluk Intan at 9.30pm on Sunday.

Hilir Perak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Adnan Basri said the three people killed were identified as S. Srinivasa Rao, 19, who was killed on the spot, and M. Phooveandra, 26, and K. C. Thinakaran, 19, who were pronounced dead at Teluk Intan Hospital.

Adnan said the trio, along with the driver of the car and a front-seat passenger, were heading to Teluk Intan from Hutan Melintang to celebrate Thinakaran's birthday.

"Initial investigation revealed that the car skidded and entered the opposite lane, before colliding with a tanker, driven by a 48-year-old man, who escaped uninjured.

"The accident also left the driver of the car, 26, and the front-seat passenger, 19, seriously injured," he said yesterday .

He added that Thinakaran was the car driver's brother.

"The driver, who is the owner of the car, had returned to his hometown in Teluk Intan for a holiday. During the incident, he went out with his brother and their friends to celebrate Thinakaran's birthday in town."

Adnan said all the deceased were taken to Teluk Intan Hospital's Forensic Unit for post-mortem.

Those injured also received treatment at the same hospital, he added.

No arrests have been made and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
