Two students win school excellence awards

MUAR: In conjunction with the 170 years' anniversary of the arrival of the La Salle Brothers to Malaya in 1852, St Andrew's School (SAS) here introduced two achievement awards for its students.

The 'MAA Robert O'Sullivan Award' went to Form 4 student Tan Yee Hen, while Gary Chong of Form 2 was named winner of the 'The Son of Saint Andrew Award'.

SAS Muar principal Woo Lee Fang said the awards were initiated by the students alumni group, Muar Andreans Association (MAA), in memory of the late Brother Robert O'Sullivan who was the school's principal-cum-Brother director from 1954 to 1980.

The gala dinner is planned in Kuala Lumpur in November.

"The Robert O'Sullivan Award of Excellence is given to recognise students' outstanding performance and contribution to the school in academic field, sports and extra-curricular activities, as well as community service.

"The Son of Saint Andrew Award is in recognition of students who have displayed outstanding work in curriculum, personality as well as co-curriculum," she said.

The awards were presented by Lasallian East Asia District Auxiliary Visitor, Brother Antonio Cubilas from Mexico at the school.

Also present included visiting brothers from the Philippines Brother Carlo Rementilla and Brother Miguel Crisostomo and Muar district education officer (Students' Development Sector) Rostam Haron.

As part of the awards launch ceremony, the three visiting La Salle brothers joined the students, teachers and guests for the school's 16th Annual Run.

Brothers Cubilas, Rementilla and Crisostomo who visited Penang on June 12 also visited St Xavier's Institution there, St George's Institution in Taiping, St Michael's Institution in Ipoh, La Salle Petaling Jaya and St Francis Institution Melaka.

There are now 29 La Salle schools in Peninsular Malaysia and six associated schools in Sabah and Sarawak.
