22 students admitted to two hospitals after typhoid outbreak at Kelantan school

KOTA BARU: Twenty-two students from a secondary school here were warded at two hospitals for typhoid fever.

Following the cases, the Kelantan Health Department has declared a typhoid outbreak at the school.

State health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the students started to show symptoms on May 7.

As of June 30, five of the 17 students were confirmed with the fever while the rest were categorised as "suspected cases".

"A total of 14 of the 17 suspected students were warded at Tumpat Hospital, two at Tengku Anis Hospital and another sought outpatient treatment."

He added that the department had started its screening tests on other students as well as teachers from the school.

"The tests began on June 20 and are ongoing," he added.

Dr Zaini said the department had opened its operation centre to assist the public with updates.

"Parents as well as those who show typhoid symptoms should immediately go to the nearest health clinic for a check-up," he added.
