KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya is offering economy rice set meals at RM3.50 or RM5 at all residential college cafeterias from tomorrow.
The university's Students Affairs Division, on its Facebook page, said this would ease students' hardship.
In a July 8 notice, the division said the RM3.50 set came with white rice, omelette and vegetables or ulam.
The RM5 set had white rice, chicken or fish, and vegetables or ulam, it said.
Both had an option of sambal or plain soup, it added.
The division said it had worked with the cafeteria operators to come up with the menu as it cared for students' wellbeing and their survival at the university.
Other universities have adopted a similar initiative. Universiti Sains Malaysia students can have white rice, vegetables, fish or chicken and gravy or chilli condiments for RM5.
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu vice-chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said the varsity had set a ceiling price of RM3.50 per meal for selected items at the cafeteria.
On July 4, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said campus food stall operators at public institutions of higher learning would be given a rent moratorium for six months from this month.
This was to lower the cost of food operators so that they could maintain the prices of food sold to students, she said.
She also announced a quality food menu at a ceiling price of RM3.50 for each order under the Keluarga Malaysia Student Food Basket initiative.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said the government would roll out the Keluarga Malaysia Menu at cooperative restaurants, cafeterias and food outlets at public universities for target groups to get meals at an affordable price.
