Kampar granite rock off limits to the public

IPOH: The porphyritic granite rock in Gunung Bujang Melaka, Kampar, which caught the attention of the public after a video about it went viral two weeks ago, is not open to the public.

State Housing, Local Government and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Nolee Ashilin Mohammed Radzi said the authorities had not confirmed the area as safe for tourists.

Nolee Ashilin said the site was in a privately owned area and the facilities there were for the owner's use.

"When the video of the rock went viral, people tried to enter the area, forcing the owner to close it off.

"The main issue is safety, because if something were to happen, the owner would be held responsible.

"That's one of the reasons why people can't enter the area."

She said this after the closing ceremony of the Reskill and Upskill programme for the Basic and Advanced Guide at Geoguide Geopark Lembah Kinta here today.

She said the state government was working with the owner so that research could be done in the area to allow people to visit it.

She said the area could be made a new geosite in the Kinta Valley Geopark.

"The local authority and the land office have contacted the owner of the land and we will ask the state Parks Corporation, together with the Department of Minerals and Geosciences Malaysia, to conduct research there.

"There are several aspects that we need to look at, including access to the area, security and value of the geosite."

The video on Facebook showed the view from the top of the rock at Gunung Bujang Melaka.

Those who viewed the video said they were surprised to know about it and expressed their interest to visit the area.
