KUALA LUMPUR: More than 4,500 people have pledged to donate their organs since the 'Organ Donor Pledge' registration feature was launched on the MySejahtera application last Tuesday (Sept 6).
According to the Health Ministry, there were 700 new organ donors on average who have pledged daily since the new feature was introduced.
"As of 3pm on Monday (Sept 12), there were more than 4,500 pledges made on the MySejahtera application.
"This was the result of the new pledge feature that was introduced in the (organ donor) initiative.
"Through the new feature, the ministry is now targeting 1,000 pledges daily to at least reach one per cent or 320,000 Malaysians who pledged as an organ donor," it said in a statement on Twitter.
On Sept 4, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the MySejahtera application will incorporate an organ donor pledge feature to raise awareness and support for the organ donation initiative, aside from making it easy for people to sign up as donors.
According to Khairy, the pledge will be shown to the next-of-kin of a deceased person as proof that he or she wanted to give the gift of life to someone else.
Khairy said that to date, there are 10,442 people waiting for organ transplants.
