GEORGE TOWN: A man died after the lorry he was driving rammed into a road sign along Persiaran Paya Terubong 2 in Bayan Lepas, here, this afternoon.
As a result, the huge signage fell onto the 48-year-old driver and pinned him to his seat for 20 minutes.
The Paya Terubong fire station was alerted to the incident at 3.20pm.
Operations officer Khairul Anuar Abd Rahim said when they arrived at the scene, they tried to extricate the victim using special rescue tools and managed to free him at 3.46pm.
"However, he was confirmed dead by paramedics who arrived at the scene," Khairul said, adding that the victim's body was then handed over to the police.
The operation was called off at 4.37pm.
It was learnt that the stretch was only meant for light vehicles.
