GE15: Why can't Najib make press statements while behind bars?, asks daughter

KUALA LUMPUR: Nooryana Najwa Najib, daughter of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is currently serving his 12-year jail sentence, wants to know why her father is not allowed to make statements behind bars.

In an Instagram post, she compared her father's purported predicament to that of opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the latter's imprisonment a few years ago.

"Why Anwar can, while Najib can't? Is it because of the name Najib?"

Najwa posted this along with 2015 news screenshots when Anwar was 'campaigning' for his wife Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for the Permatang Pauh by-election by making press statements through his lawyer, Latheefa Koya.

This comes after Prisons Department senior director of prisons policy, Supri Hashim said that prisoners serving a sentence are not allowed to issue any statement, which included the former prime minister.

In earlier reports, prisons department director-general Nordin Muhammad stated that the former Pekan MP was not permitted to campaign in GE15.

Najib is now serving his sentence in Kajang Prison after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and sentence in an SRC International funds case.
