KUALA LUMPUR: The Transport Ministry has been urged to reveal the root cause of the breakdown in the light rail transit (LRT) Kelana Jaya line recently and act against those in charge of the services.
DAP's Lim Lip Eng said caretaker minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong must also explain the poor maintenance culture which led to the breakdown as it had affected many commuters.
He said an explanation was needed as such service disruptions - which seemed to be happening at an increased frequency, cannot be tolerated.
"Commuters were forced to go through much inconvenience for five days.
"It cannot remain a mystery that only the minister knows the root cause, unless - of course, there is something sinister that the authorities are trying to hide," he said.
Lim said Wee should reflect how Singapore handled a similar problem when its MRT system failed on July 7, 2015.
He said the company operating the MRT services was fined a total of S$5.4m for a mere few hours' breakdown.
"Back here, Wee is only playing the blame game and used the DAP as a punching bag for exaggerating the incident," he said in a statement.
Lim said the ministry must explain if anyone would be held accountable for the LRT breakdown and if a hefty fine or even termination of the contracts of engineers, suppliers or contractors involved would be initiated.
"The people had enough of this kind of disruption that affects their quality of life yet, no one was punished for it," he said.
Wee yesterday announced that the Kelana Jaya LRT line will resume operations from 6am today following the five-day-shutdown involving 16 stations from Kelana Jaya to Ampang Park that began last week.
He said this followed intensive tests conducted that involved 38 trains, all the way from Gombak to Putra Heights to ensure the Kelana Jaya line is totally safe and ready for full reopening.
