DAP has no credibility to speak about anti-terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said DAP has no credibility to speak on anti-terrorism as it previously wanted the government under Pakatan Harapan to remove the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) from the list of terror organisations.

Muhyiddin said at the time, several DAP members were arrested for alleged involvement with LTTE, which was listed as a terrorist group under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

"DAP urged me, as the home minister at the time, to remove LTTE from the list with the argument that it no longer exists as its leaders were killed in Sri Lanka, so its members should be freed.

"I was briefed by the police that there are some former LTTE members who have fled to Malaysia and are still a threat to the country's security. So I insisted that the decision to remove LTTE from the list could not be made wantonly," said Muhyiddin in a posting on his Facebook page.

He said DAP was not happy with his firmness and they wanted to intervene in the matters of national security without thinking about the implications to the people and the country as they were not bothered with all this, as long as their narrow political interests were met.

"I did not give in to their demands but I was surprised when (the then) Attorney-General (Tan Sri) Tommy Thomas dropped the charges on those accused of being involved in LTTE activities, including several DAP members.

"They have compromised national security for their narrow political interests. This is an utterly irresponsible act.

"For me, DAP or PH does not have the credibility to speak about peace or anti-terrorism," Muhyiddin said in response to a statement by DAP vice chairman Nga Kor Ming who said that Malaysia would be a Taliban state if PN rules the country.
