Separation of powers of A-G, citizenship status issue top Azalina's to-do list

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has pledged to address laws that are outdated by making the necessary amendments.

The newly-appointed minister in the Prime Minister's Department (law and institutional reform) said portfolio she helms involved issues which stretch across various levels of government.

"One example is the separation of power of the attorney-general and the public prosecutor, to preserve the independence of the public prosecutor's discretion," she said in a statement today.

The Pengerang member of parliament also gave her assurances that outstanding issues, including the citizenship status of children born overseas to Malaysian mothers and foreign fathers, will see continued progress.

"Where need be, laws will be reformed to reinstate rights to the vulnerable, marginalised, and those who are not treated equally in our nation," she said.

Azalina said she was looking forward to working alongside elected representatives from various parties to address the challenges that lie ahead.

She also thanked Pengerang constituents for electing her to represent them.

"I do not take this mandate lightly, and I will do my best to carry out the duty entrusted to me. Pengerang jaga Pengerang. InsyaAllah."
