Govt to step up Malaysian-Thai border security

PUTRAJAYA: The Home Ministry will improve border control cooperation at the Thai-Malaysian border following a bomb blast at the rail tracks connecting Hatyai and Padang Besar.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, said cooperation was being enhanced with the neighbouring country for precautionary measures.

"We spoke on that matter during a meeting with the Thai minister yesterday. We pledged to give our full commitment and increase the cooperation to control the border with Thailand.

"I would like to emphasise that this is not just because of the bombing incident recently in Thailand and Bandung, but a continuous commitment to sustain good relationship between the two countries," he said at a press conference after a meeting with the Immigration Department officials in Putrajaya today.

On the measures taken to address security issues, Saifuddin said they would be announced soon.

"When the time comes, we will announce (the measures). The matter was deliberated during our discussion but it is too premature for me to answer now.

"I would (also) like to advise Malaysians visiting there (Thailand) to plan their trip wisely by taking into account the current situation.

"It is the authorities' responsibility, however, we need to avoid dangerous places. That should be the main principle."

Last week, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) services from Hatyai to Padang Besar were disrupted after the rail tracks were bombed by unknown perpetrators.

In the 12.50pm (local time) incident, 11 out of 15 container wagons were damaged and derailed.

Police found a homemade bomb weighing about 26kg on the tracks.

SRT said no injuries were reported. Two drivers, a technician and several workers were on the train at the time of the incident.

The blast, however, caused severe damage to the rail tracks.
