A-G to explain on Pulau Batu Puteh controversy [NSTTV]

PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has requested the attorney-general (A-G) to have more meaningful negotiations with Singapore on the review of actions and legal issues regarding Pulau Batu Puteh.

Anwar said the A-G had been requested to detail the controversy relating to the matter.

"We requested the A-G to give an explanation on the island controversy and issue, which are now being transferred to Singapore by the inspector-general of police.

"We have also requested for any effects (of the issue) to be examined and scrutinised to avoid problems arising within these two countries," he said after the cabinet meeting today.

In 2008, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) decided that Pulau Batu Puteh belonged to Singapore, Middle Rocks to Malaysia and South Ledge to the state in the territorial waters in which it is located.

In June 2017, Malaysia applied to the ICJ to request an interpretation of the judgment.

However, the Pakatan Harapan government in 2018 under the leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, withdrew the application to overturn the ICJ's ruling awarding legal jurisdiction of Batu Puteh to Singapore.
