Batang Kali landslide: No new development on SAR op on Day 8

BATANG KALI: Eight days after the Batang Kali landslide tragedy, the search-and-rescue (SAR) operation has not made any progress towards finding the last casualty.

Because of the sunny weather since this morning, rescuers have been able to continue their efforts without having to temporarily halt the search.

Trusted canines were deployed earlier to the restricted area, away from the location where the media was gathering near the operation site.

Two large excavators that had been operating since the early days of SAR left the landslide area, indicating that the search radius has been reduced.

There are no official updates from the ground commander yet.

On the plus side, rescuers received steady supplies of food and refreshment from volunteers and non-governmental groups.

Rescuers, who are seen walking in and out of the landslide area, remain upbeat that they will find the final victim.

It is believed that a press conference will be held on the progress of the SAR later today.

Last Friday, a landslide struck Father's Organic Farm about 2am, dumping 450,000 cubic metres of earth on campsites below.

Sixty-one people survived, and 30 died in the incident. These included families and a group of teachers from SJK (C) Mun Choong.
